Large crowds of shoppers arrived for the one day Sidewalk Sale sponsored by the Downtown Frederick Association. Outdoor displays extended from Church Street to Patrick with art exhibits. North Market Street block roped off for the event and both city lots filled. Clerks reported mixed crowd size versus last year, but sales were advancing well with many praising the event as better than indoor shopping.

Baltimore Woolworth building fire causes major damage
AP reports two firefighters were injured as flames tore through the three story Woolworth building in downtown Baltimore. Damage reached 500000 dollars, the first big blaze in the business district in six years. Firemen William Pope and Edward Bolton were hurt. the blaze required 256 firefighters and 45 units to control over nearly two hours.

Alert Trooper Catches 2 In Safe Robbery
A state trooper stopped a car on U S 40 at Bradock Heights around 4 a m and found a safe in the trunk. Suspects Frank D. Keefer and William E. McKenzie, both in custody, are held for grand larceny and breaking and entering after a break in at Village Lanes Bowling Center. Frederick County School Board sets track meet transport plan
The Frederick County Board of Education agreed to provide all local transportation for the National AAU Women’s Track Meet at Thomas Johnson High School stadium on June 30 and July 12. The board also authorized the superintendent to coordinate with the meet steering committee on athlete transport to rail stations and airports. They called for bids on June 22 for a $300,000 Frederick High School renovation funded partly by federal funds and approved plans for a new warehouse at Harmony Grove. The board ruled husbands and wives should not be employed as teachers in the same school and approved upgrades including electric typewriters for the new Thomas Johnson High School. Dr. Warren Evans was reappointed to the Park and Recreation Commission. a new non-teaching vice principal was approved at North Frederick Elementary. The warehouse decision faced opposition from board president Mrs. Hodgson.

In Pasadena, California, Surveyor 1 achieved a first try lunar landing with televised footage showing a smooth hard surface in the Sea of Storms. Surveyor 1 carried a four by six inch American flag to the moon and planted it on the lunar crust.
