Vetoed Bill Was Faulty Says Governor McKeldin
ANNAPOLIS June 1 Governor McKeldin said he vetoed a bill to raise the State incentive fund for school construction because it lacked financing provisions and shown legislative insincerity in avoiding his tax plan. He warned the Legislature would have time to craft a sound revenue and equalization measure when it reconvenes in February 1956. The vetoed bill would have increased State aid per pupil from $10 to $20 and altered local shares, with unequal property assessments. The Maryland State Teachers Association condemned the veto as a disregard for Maryland children. The governor noted a surplus proposal and potential future school needs were ignored. RESCUED FROM BAY ANNAPOLIS June 1 Two men were saved from Shenandoah Bay after clinging to a capsized rowboat for an hour and a half. Guy Houston of New Albany Mass and Edward Martin of Woodland Beach were pulled from the water about three quarters of a mile off Thomas Point. Captain Stanley Windsor credited providence for sighting them.
