Maryland Roads Commission debate on reform and bills

Debates centered on transforming the three member Maryland State Roads Commission into a department with a single director, named McCain as the first head. McCain noted few states allow governor appointment without General Assembly confirmation. Controversy persisted over commissions’ terms and oversight. A related hearing discussed federal highway funding, expressway projects, and a pending bill about the Northeastern Expressway. Other items included a 4-H club contest and a boy struck by a car near Braddock Heights with injuries treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

A brisk Potomac wind created whitecaps and muddy water as opening fishing day began. Regional Game Warden Benjamin Firebus and Deputy Warden Glenn D. Butts checked 185 anglers from Knoxville to Noland's Ferry. Milton Frank Jr. of Frederick caught the largest US legal bass at 14 inches. Nightcrawlers were best bait. many fish under the 10 inch minimum, including catfish and eels, were reported near Camp Kanawha. The MonocACY and tributaries remained muddy from last Sunday's storm, but Potomac conditions improved downstream near Knoxville. The season runs to November 30.
