Hood College Receives 1794 Linnaeus Illustrated Volume
The Hood College Library has been gifted An Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus, a 1794 hand colored folio edition presented to Dr. Church by Priscilla A H Wilson Ross and her husband Charles W Ross III of Frederick. The volume, restored at Johns Hopkins, features 108 plates and traces Linnaeus classification from genera to species, amid historical debate over its erotic framing. Restoration by John F. Dean and Joanna Mankowski preserves a reversible process, with pages cleaned, deacidified, and tears repaired for future rebinding.
