Giant Plastic Sphere Lights Up Night Sky
A massive plastic sphere about as tall as a ten story building rose to 200 miles above Virginia’s coast at dusk. The aluminum coated ball is a forerunner of lightweight satellites for relaying radio and TV signals, launched from Wallops Island by NASA. It was visible across the Washington area and up to 1000 miles along the Atlantic coast as a smoke streak marked the ascent.
