BR Alexander of Hartford took the first time prize, B A Clark of New York second, and Thomas Firth of Harrison third. Many riders fell, wrecked wheels, and suffered bruises though some remounted muddy and bloodied.
The British and American teams played a highly watched chess contest in the Capitol with Mr Pearson and Mr Plunkett as lead players. The match featured rapid moves, diplomatic exchanges, and rapid wireless transmission of the game.

John Flannagan, Ireland and England hammer throwing champion, set a world record at 150 feet with Jim Sinchel challenging him at Bergen Point. Meixell defalcations threaten Lehigh valley banks as Almighty Voice and two others are killed in Manitoba while a fatal bicycle collision in Atlanta leaves Miss Anna Hunter critically injured.
Health Officer Dr Maynard reports Frederick’s sanitary conditions improved over the past month. May records list 14 interments and 10 deaths with details by age, cause, and location, plus 24 marriage licenses issued and 92 deeds filed in May.
A strong quake yesterday shook Frederick city and Frederick County and was felt across Maryland and the District of Columbia. Mrs Rhodes in Second Street felt the house jar while sorting books in the garret and looked out the window to see no one on the roof. George Cram near Jefferson reported shaking windows and other family members felt the tremor.
The Frederick Post Office location remains unsettled as the Washington department has not announced its decision on bids submitted May 15. The current lease expires July 1 and renewal likelihood is unclear. Market Street property owners submitted bids, while current space suffices for now but lacks floor area.

A collision near Merrick Boulevard, Valley Stream, injured and killed several Brooklyn youths from Greene Avenue Baptist church party.
