May Force Disclosure Of Rate Hikes

In Baltimore Maryland the 1959 General Assembly may consider legislation to require public disclosure of proposed auto insurance rate increases before they take effect. Del Edgar P. Silver predicted the motor vehicles committee would draft such a bill for the next session. The meeting criticized some insurance agents dealing in motorist coverage and noted recent rate increases by 165 stock companies and 32 Mutual Insurance Rating Bureau members. Silver urged broader powers for the state insurance commissioner to administer auto insurance laws, citing partial public hearings on Blue Cross rate boosts. Deputy commissioner John H. Coppage opposed forcing public announcements, and agents near the State Motor Vehicles office were accused of charging drivers with revoked licenses high premiums while other companies denied coverage.

Faubus Victory Deepens Rift in Democratic Party

Washington AP reports Gov. Orval Faubus of Arkansas won a sweeping Democratic renomination, signaling potential rifts within the party over school integration. Analysts say the result could push many Southern politicians toward or against a segregationist fifth party in 1960, while two anti integration foes call it a setback for integration and caution against assuming Faubus leads a broader movement. Senators Javits and Neuberger echo concerns that Arkansas’ vote may harden anti integration sentiment in the South and complicate future presidential choices.
