John Hamilton led the Quay forces, and D. H. Hastings led the opposition. Wilbur F. Reeder was re elected county chairman. Delegates to the state convention were elected and Edward G. McKinley nominated for prothonotary. The sole endorsement supported the National administration.
Topeka July 31 Mrs Carrie Nation jailed for joint smashing was pardoned by Governor Stanley. She initially refused the pardon over nonremittance of fine and costs but later accepted. County commissioners will permit payment of 150 dollars in installments of four dollars monthly.
Frisco labor crisis deepens as City Front Federation of 14 unions issues a general walkout order. About 12,000 workers heed the call, leaving ships or distant jobs untouched until return. Industry and maritime traffic halt, wholesale houses consider shutdowns, and city services face peril without coal and oil supplies.
Roanoke Virginia July 31 detectives report two bodies found Monday along a county road between Pocahontas and Cooper West Virginia. John Tolby and Charles Berry had been murdered and robbed. Six suspects are in custody Mary Graham Bob Niddiffer Pete Spangler George Nelson George Graham and Jack Martin.

In Chillicothe Missouri July 31 William J Bryan refused to say he would run for any office again but refused to rule out candidacy. He called such questions foolish and warned against binding himself to future races. In Sunbury Pennsylvania July 31 John Cuich who killed his mother and brother in April attempted suicide in his prison cell by slitting his throat with a table knife. He was found bleeding but the wound was treated and considered not serious. The death-ward crime case will go to trial in September.
At the Third Lackawanna district Democratic convention in Scranton Pennsylvania delegates John J. Coyne Minooka and J N Geaves Scott were chosen to the state convention Elliott Sweet Benton and M C Judge Taylor were named alternates The party denounced the Republican state administration and endorsed the candidacy of Harmon Yerkes Bucks county for the Democratic nomination for supreme court justice
In Honesdale on July 31 Ellsworth Bodie’s Prompton home was hit by lightning and burned. A shotgun Bodie saved discharged accidentally, the shot piercing his hand and entering his chest, causing two serious wounds.
Ohio populists, meeting in Columbus, denounce the Ohio party battles as a sham, with a free silver convention set for today. A plan to unite against both major tickets may deliver Mayor Samuel M. Jones of Toledo as governor if his platform suits the movement. Separately, a Rock Island wreck near Kremlin Killed a passenger and injured twenty four homeseekers aboard. A Kiowa Comanche land drawing in El Reno continues as 20,090 people observe the lottery with 4,500 numbers drawn in total.
John Stewart, who says he is a second cousin of the late Alexander T. Stewart, sues Horace D Russell and Edward D Harris, executors of Judge Henry D Hilton's will. He seeks recovery of valuable Broadway property as heir to the Stewart estate, joining a long line of claimants.
Indianapolis July 31 The National Socialist convention tried to heal factional rifts between Chicago and Springfield leaders. Debs dismissed shelved as minor while warning harmony is not yet assured. The platform favors public ownership of utilities and public works, shorter hours, and expanded social programs.
Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania July 31 A group of striking machinists who had gone to Williamsport quit Monday to take positions but returned last night saying a strike was on in Williamsport and they refused to take the places of the strikers. Amsterdam July 31 Mr Kruger yesterday received Robert H Van Schaik treasurer of the Holland Society of Chicago who presented an invitation for him to visit the United States.
National League results include Boston beating New York 5 to 4 and Brooklyn defeating Philadelphia 8 to 3. Cincinnati edged Chicago 4 to 0. St Louis and Pittsburgh had no game. American League games show Cleveland defeating Philadelphia 6 to 0, with other clubs not scheduled.
