Draft Board Swamped After LBJ Speech
Ten minutes after President Johnson called for doubling the draft, the local draft board office was swamped with calls from men worried about their status. A 19-year-old said if drafted he would comply but his plans would be ruined, while others noted little opposition to the Viet Nam buildup but concern over the process. Many draft-age men sought status updates and changes, with new fathers among those calling or visiting the office to report family additions.
