Civil rights leaders urge curtailment of mass marches
Six national civil rights leaders called for a broad curtailment or moratorium on mass marches and demonstrations until after the November presidential election. They criticized Barry Goldwater and urged Negroes to boost voter registration, saying racism is injected into the campaign by Goldwater forces. Roy Wilkins of the NAACP stressed the statement is not a Johnson document and criticized Republicans who should not be ignored.
