Space Work Gets Setback
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP America's astronauts suffered a jolting setback in the man in space race when an Atlas missile exploded 65 seconds after lift off during a heat re entry test of the Project Mercury capsule. The seven astronauts watched as the Atlas disintegrated after radio contact was lost. Navy ships searched the waters south of the Cape for debris while NASA officials believed the capsule remained afloat briefly before sinking. The cause was undetermined and the test will be repeated with further shots planned, delaying Mercury weeks.
