U S To Launch A Manmade Satellite
President Eisenhower announced the United States plans to launch the first manmade Earth circling satellites by end of 1958. The small glassy globes would circle the globe every 80 minutes at about 16 010 miles per hour and 200 to 300 miles up, testing weather, radio, and solar radiation data for scientific progress.
Type of Satellite Matches Proposals of U. M. Physicist
Baltimore July 29 President Eisenhower said the United States plans a scientific satellite matches for a University of Maryland physicist S Fred Singer who for years has argued a small floating lab could orbit Earth for about two thirds the cost of a bomber. The MOUSE would be a three stage craft using a captured V2 rocket to 50 miles and two more stages to reach 200 miles then 17 050 miles per hour. It would spin around Earth until reentry into atmosphere. Airplanes would receive 30 second broadcasts from a solar powered transmitter. Scientists would measure cloud cover magnetic storms cosmic rays winds and turbulence and study interplanetary space. The project is viewed as militaryly useful and the White House invited Russia and others to share information. Peter Kapitza is cited as a Soviet nuclear scientist involved in unmanned satellite work.
