Ex-inspector Roger H Willard said heavy rains paused work for weeks, but sunny days this past week enabled maintenance and progress on new builds. Plans include completing grading on the Garfield to Smithsburg mountain road, 125 miles of penetration macadam, and beginning stone placement early next week.

Daniel W. Hendricks, 34, of Shenandoah Junction, reportedly drowned last night when his motor boat overturned in the Potomac River near Ratting Springs. Fire Department rescue teams with grappling hooks and floodlights worked all night. the body has not been recovered. He is survived by his wife and three children.
