Frederick County planning officials say 17 000 approved homes across 67 developments loom as demand for water sewers roads and schools grows. With current building rates about 2500 yearly it could take seven years to reach the cul de sac underlining capacity limits and debates over growth management.
The Senate opened its Whitewater hearings with Republicans challenging White House aides on influencing the Clinton era inquiry. Sen. Alfonso D Amato accused the White House of concealing and distorting the truth as the session focused on Vincent Foster s death and Madison Savings & Loan ties to Clinton partners.
Talbot County Circuit Court halted the statewide ban that would have taken effect Monday, drawing mixed reactions from Frederick business owners. Randy Bartlett of Betty's Banquets and PL Cahoots argued against the ban, while Paul Huber of Frederick Towne Stationers welcomed a temporary delay, urging legislative review. Local leaders stress the issue warrants House debate before enforcement and question bureaucratic authority.
Dr. J Richard Crouse 59 a prominent Frederick dentist and civic leader died suddenly July 28 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital Oakland He was born July 5 1935 in Hagerstown son of Harold Woodrow and B Marie Osborne Crouse He graduated from St Marys High School 1954 attended Hagerstown Junior College and Wiliam and Mary College later earning from Shepherd College and University of Maryland Dental School 1961 He began private practice in 1962 in Frederick and was a Terrace Dental Group partner He served as director of the Maryland Dental Plan Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland chairman of Frederick Memorial Hospital board director of Farmers and Mechanics National Bank and member of several dental societies He founded the Charles E Broadrup Scholarship Fund 1974 and earned the Thomas Bader Award twice and the 1980 Maryland Distinguished Service Award the article notes continued on Page A-5.
Boonsboro teenager David G. Appleby aged 17 was arrested in Frederick by Maryland State Police. He faces first degree murder and multiple charges for a deadly shooting of Warren Steven Slayman, 27, near Clevelandtown Road outside Boonsboro. He is held without bail in Washington County Detention Center. The victim is the son of Williamsport Mayor John Slayman.
A Silver Spring man, Derrick Bernard Smith, had felony charges for cocaine possession dropped by Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Lawrence A. Dorsey Jr. Though already convicted of murder and serving two life terms plus 60 years, Smith was arrested in January 1993 after Frederick City Police stopped him near North Bentz Street and West Seventh Street during an armed robbery investigation. Police recovered 3.5 grams of crack cocaine and $900, with no weapon found.
Cloudy conditions persist with possible showers tonight and lows in the upper sixties. Saturday will be warm to hot with a chance of showers and highs in the upper nineties. A weather map appears on page A-2.
