A savage thunderstorm lashed Frederick County Tuesday night with lightning and thunder. About 1.13 inches of rain was recorded as five crews answered six fire calls for buildings struck by lightning. Roughly 400 Potomac Edison customers lost power, restored by mid evening, with the worst outages in Carroll and northern Baltimore counties affecting around 10,000 customers, 60 percent in Carroll. Fire crews reported several fires including a storage unit at Taneytown and a house fire on Spout Springs Road, contained by sprinklers and water damage mostly from the storm.

Man dies in mishap on Md. 80
A Carroll County man William Eugene Brown 33 of Woodbine was killed on Md. 80 as he lay in the eastbound lane near Sugarloaf Drive. An unidentified eastbound vehicle struck him and fled. Police note Brown may have been drinking prior to the accident. Investigating officers Tpr Wartman and Th Ab Hewitt say the case is ongoing. This raises Frederick County road deaths to 24 for the year, up from 18 the previous year.
