The piece weighs how profit percentages alone misstate profiteering. It argues efficiency matters more than a single 20 percent return, noting that higher turnover with modest margins can favor the community. It cautions against tying value to capital speed without context.

War Shorn Glamour Dampens Salon Des Artistes Reflecting War
A review notes the Salon des Artistes Francais now shows war’s grim reality. Many artists avoided front lines, but those who served render the battlefield’s misery with stark truth. Images depict exhausted soldiers, bloodstained uniforms, and wounded hope rather than heroism or triumph.

Selling Shoes Under Difficulties in Flooded Towns
Dean R. Stover a southern salesman for a Brockton shoe concern faced floods that washed away the only bridge. He crossed in a flat bottom skiff after hiring a tank to reach a town 15 miles away where trains were scarce. He surveyed customers, delivered samples, and described the day as a bold sales effort amid high water. In Philadelphia a floating store owner kept a monkey that swims to shore to watch a baby aboard a boat beside Gloucester City near the Delaware River. The animal, from a ship anchored upriver, has shown a habit of caring for the child.

Auto Drivers Harshly Treated In Maryland Test Case
Letter from Sam M. Grist of Yorkville recounts J Meek Smith of Clover being halted by Maryland officers for lacking dimmers and proper plates while driving from Detroit to North Carolina. Smith fined 10 dollars and costs in each case, or 36 dollars total, after arrest and magistrate hearing. The writer claims travelers faced extortion at two blocks from the first arrest, with a second officer demanding 2 dollars per person for a roundabout route totaling 6 dollars for the party. The piece argues lack of courtesy to strangers and questions Maryland authorities’ tolerance of such incidents along the route between Detroit and Frederick and toward Clover.
