Chicago railroads halt all freight for packing plants as union Freight Handlers' Union chief Lawrence J. Curtan orders members to refuse any load for the yards. Packers claim plants run near capacity while labor leaders say the industry is demoralized and near standstill, yet slaughter continues at high rates. Desertions from strikers are offset by substitute workers.
Ex Senator Henry G. Davis travels from Bedford Springs to Elkins West Virginia where he declines to discuss campaign details until formal nomination. He expresses strong support for Judge Parker and vows to aid the Democratic ticket while preparing for the state convention and August 6 church cornerstone event.
Reports from New York say a special session of the U S circuit court will hear the federal grand jury report on the General Slocum disaster. Indictments are believed to target Captain Van Schaick Inspector Lundberg and Inspector Fleming with others facing charges tied to duty failures.
