In Minneapolis 535 nailers and packers across 22 flour mills threaten a temporary suspension. Workers demand wages of 2.75 dollars per day for packers and 2.95 for nailers, restored to 1893 levels. Employers offered a five year contract but refused to sign. A one year contract is sought after today’s conference. a strike could draw broad sympathy from mill workers.
Emperor Francis Joseph sent a generous gift to Senora Concha Mendez the Mexican songstress on her 80th birthday recalling the incident after Maximilian’s execution when she refused to vilify the dead. In New York a steamer delivered 575 400 cigars the largest shipment to port. In Aden a fight between Mad Mullan and the British left 70 Mullan killed and British losses.
The Amalgamated Association faces a possible settlement with United States Steel Corp this week after a New York conference between officials and leaders Shaffer and Williams. A basis for talks remains confidential while a national board meeting in Pittsburgh may push negotiations forward.

A young man calling himself Arthur Fitzroy Somerset Dundas asserts he is a son of Major and Mrs Wurts Dundas or Mrs Wurts Dundas and seeks a share with Ralph Wurts Dundas. The family denies him, saying the name was adopted but the mother used a different surname. The case exposes a secret in a wealthy Philadelphia family.
London reports United States Ambassador Choate has left for Holland not for a holiday but to mediate a settlement at Kruger’s invitation. The Daily Express dismisses the rumor as fanciful noting Dr Leyds has left for Paris and calling it a South African gooseberry.
Thousands crowd the El Reno district as 13 000 homestead claims are drawn from two five opening wheels. Envelopes with applicant names are opened and numbered. 500 names per box drawn daily, with 1 000 envelopes processed today and the rest to follow.
