Judge Hoffmann Dies At Cumberland After Illness
Judge Henry W. Hoffmann, longtime jurist and political figure in Cumberland, died at his Washington Street home after a long illness. Born December 17, 1825, he practiced law, served in the state legislature, as sergeant-at-arms, and held federal posts under Lincoln. His death creates a vacancy in the Fourth Circuit to be filled by election in November, with possible gubernatorial interim appointment. In a separate incident, a lightning strike set Hartman barn near Emmitsburg ablaze, destroying the structure and nearly all contents. Grace Hartman led a daring effort to free cattle and a horse and colt escaped unharmed.
