Foreign Aid Gets Support From House Committee
The House Foreign Affairs Committee advanced Kennedy’s long range foreign aid plan authorizing up to 88 billion in loan commitments by borrowing from the Treasury with repayments on existing overseas loans. The panel also approved 4.9555 billion in foreign grants and loans for the current year, about 407 million below Kennedy’s request, setting up broader fights on year to year appropriations. A Senate panel already backed a five year 8 billion program, after trimming this year’s ask by 436 million, with full Senate debate to begin soon.
