Allied lines press toward Coutances as Omar Bradley’s spearheads deepen a 17 mile front. Reports say 12 German divisions face encirclement with 3,000 prisoners taken in two days. Patton speculation and mayor shifts hint at a major pocket in western Normandy.
Ankara reports Bulgaria negotiating with the Allies to exit the war. An Istanbul rider notes Russia pressing for four Soviet consulates in Bulgaria, threatening ties. Turkey in suspicion of diplomatic rupture with Germany. Vichy claims Mediterranean shipping halt may occur.
Mayor Hugh W Gittinger reported Warner Bros has received WPB approval for improvements to the City Opera House. A Mohler Construction Company contract will start work in about three weeks once steel is delivered. The contractor will coordinate with the Mayor and City Engineer W Raymond Walter on project details.
The OWI reported hearing a British radio broadcast of a German soldier's notebook entry from France. He reflected that those who retreat will someday see their homeland again, adding a somber note to wartime coverage.
Frederick city and surrounding countryside pressed on with cleanup after a Wednesday night windstorm described as the worst since the 1929 tornado. Utilities restored service, with 30 to 600 local telephones back in use and many lines repaired. damage included unroofed barns, collapsed chimneys, and a damaged silo.
British submarines have destroyed 21 Japanese supply ships and other craft in Far Eastern waters, and damaged several others with torpedoes and gunfire, according to the Admiralty announcement.
Governor Thomas E. Dewey opposed the reelection of Republican Congressman Hamilton Fish in New Yorks 29th District. Dewey condemned Fish for raising racial and religious issues, calling such conduct disgraceful and un-American. Fish denied supporting the national GOP ticket and commented on Jewish support for the New Deal.
Sgt. D. Melvin Corun, son of Mr and Mrs J Raymond Corun of Jefferson, wounded in action in France and recuperating in an English hospital. He writes his parents that he was wounded sometime between June 10 and 19. he does not detail injuries. He played a long role with Company A of the 115th Infantry, left Frederick in 1941, brother of Sgt John R Corun Jr a B 26 tail gunner, and another brother Ashby also serves.
A U S troop transport plane crashed into a 40 foot cliff near Mull of Galloway in southwest Scotland killing 24 people including 17 wounded American soldiers and six crew members and a nurse. Wounded were en route to a Scottish hospital. a fire followed the impact and many bodies were burned beyond recognition. Two other planes in the formation landed at a Scottish airfield to raise the alarm.
Berlin remained isolated from the outside world last night amid reports similar to those that preceded a failed murder plot against Hitler. Goebbels issued two total war orders banning vacations for women workers and mandating front line troops to perform manual repairs once done by Todt labor.
London reports robotic bombs causing destruction in the city and surrounding areas. A lunchtime blast wrecked a shop, toppled a bus, and hurled a car into a storefront with fire breaking out. Firefighters and rescuers worked to reach trapped shopgirls and customers as crowds mistook the noise for an aircraft.
A Maryland wide series of meetings will explain the new Office of Price Administration restaurant regulations effective July 31. An auction of captured enemy gear will be held Saturday night in Market Space near the Opera House to raise war bond funds in the Fifth drive. Items include five German machine guns, German airplane propellers, shell cases, tank periscopes, a Messerschmitt rudder, Nazi helmets, plus French and British helmets, one with a bullet hole. Displayed this afternoon at 112 114 West Patrick Street. The county is about 40900 short of its E bond goal but hopes to reach it by sale night.
Washington reports that James F Byrnes aged 65 and long a central figure in politics with a stint on the Supreme Court may be preparing to retire after nearly 30 years in national public affairs.
Berlin announced Brest Litovsk and Kaunas abandoned as Soviet forces surged through the Baltic states Poland and the Carpathians toward East Prussia. Russians near Berlin within 340 miles. Moscow reports 1.6 thousand towns fallen amid a two mile per hour advance by eight Soviet army groups.
Eighth Army troops capture the village of San Casciano seven miles south of Florence as they press toward the city amid strong opposition. Westward, forces reach within four miles of Empoli while Polish units hold the Misa river area near Senigallia. Patrols and artillery duels continue along the Fifth Army front on Italy's west coast.
London reports public speculation that Lt. Gen. George S. Patton Jr. may be commanding American tank forces breaking German lines in Normandy. No official confirmation on Patton’s whereabouts. Germany claims he is in France. Patton is widely regarded as an outstanding armored leader. Also noted is progress by at least seven of 13 South American republics on hydroelectric and irrigation postwar projects.
