Seaman Rescued by Nazi U-Boat Near East Coast Port

Archie Gibbs of Rostor Texas, aged 36, was rescued from the sea by a German U-boat after two ships had been sunk nearby within 74 hours. The sub zigzagged and crash-dived as it was attacked. Gibbs, four days captive, heard bombs, and the crew offered food but he could not eat. His own ship was torpedoed in the Caribbean on June 14, and a rescue vessel sunk the next day. Gibbs swam to a lifeboat, then was taken aboard the U-boat. He later reached a Caribbean island and flew to the port. The Germans later stopped a small craft. Gibbs was ordered to board and take valuables, then swam to the other vessel. Six hours later he reached a Caribbean island and flew to the port.
