Woman builds life owning pawnshop in tough St Louis neighborhood
Penny Malina, 25, owns P.J. Loans in north St Louis, a busy pawnbroker who sees a wide range of customers from millionaires buying diamonds to people pawning a watch for a dollar. She began at 15, left college plans, and started her shop in 1981. She keeps four guns ready after one break-in and notes regulars return at month start and end as checks arrive and fade.
