Car Train Collision Kills County Woman at Point of Rocks

A 20 year old mother, Kathy Mae Hubble, died at the Point of Rocks crossing when her northbound car was struck by an east bound B and O diesel freight train. Her one year old daughter Denise Michele Hubble survived with no major injuries. The train engineer, Robert Monroe Knight, said the mother may have attempted to open her door before impact. The crossing near her home is heavily used by boaters and canal enthusiasts. State Police continue investigation.

Weekend Crime Wave Strikes City and State Police

State and City Police logged three robberies six break ins and four larceny arrests during a busy weekend. Victims included Charles McDonald Joseph Roberts and Charles Gilbert with losses ranging from 100 to 2000 dollars. Robberies led to charges against Beverly Marie Bowie and Milton Lewis Offord with bond set for August six. Six break ins included Richard F Kline office on East Patrick Street. Detectives named multiple suspects and ongoing inquiries continue.

Maryland Study Plans Scenic Rivers System Include Monocacy

The Maryland Planning Department study titled Scenic Rivers in Maryland proposes immediate inclusion of Patuxent, Pocomoke, Severn, Youghiogheny, and Wicomico-Zekiah Swamp. Monocacy slated for evaluation in 1970-71, with six local streams listed for future study to form a larger Scenic Rivers program focused on land use, wildlife, and recreation alongside water quality and human activity.

No Relief Seen From Heat Wave

The weather bureau warns no relief from the heat wave gripping Frederick with weekend highs of 93 Saturday and 91 Sunday. Temperatures may top 90 again this afternoon with fair skies and high humidity. A 30 percent chance of afternoon or evening thunderstorms is possible through Wednesday, with tonight’s lows near 70 and early fog from lingering humidity. Overnight lows were 66 Saturday and 63 Sunday night.

Salazar Dies at 81 After 36 Years as Portugal Leader

Lisbon AP reports Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, Portugal’s premier and dictator for 36 years, died at his Lisbon home at 9.45 am after a long illness. He was 81, the continent’s longest-serving modern government chief. Salazar, a shy economist, led Portugal and its African colonies with an iron grip since 1932, limiting opposition and controlling police and press.

Housing Authority Builds Low Rent Housing in Frederick

Barbara Laughlin reports the Frederick Housing Authority to expand low cost housing with Projects MD 3-5 and MD 3-6. MD 3-5 adds townhouses and duplexes near Sagner and Pennsylvania Ave with a community building. MD 3-6, a 100 unit elderly high rise on Molter Avenue, requires age 62 plus disabled people from 50. Waiting list stood at 122 as of June 30, applicants must appear in person at West 2nd Street office to qualify.

Militant Black Leader Dies In Texas Gunfight

The Houston black militant leader Carl Hampton 21 and four other men were wounded or killed in a gun battle after a rally linked to the People’s Party I. A white associate of Students for a Democratic Society was injured. police seized weapons and party literature. In Columbus Ohio 350 youths clashed with police prompting arrests. Cambridge Massachusetts police dispersed 250 youths near Harvard Square with five arrests. West Chester Pennsylvania Puerto Rican residents clashed with police. no serious injuries reported.

U S Bombers Step Up Attack On Enemy Bases

AP reports U.S. B52 bombers attacked North Vietnamese positions at eight border points with Cambodia and Laos, delivering about 1200 tons of bombs on bunkers, bases, and depots. Additional raids targeted supply routes as a 2500-strong South Vietnamese task force moved in southeastern Cambodia near Kompong Trabek.

Charter Government Petitions Due Filing
