Rescue From Downed Plane Described At Clark Field
Nine survivors huddled under canvas on a raft after a British liner was shot down off Hainan Island. Capt Jack Woodyard led the rescue in an SA16 Albatross, pulling the injured and dazed survivors including six year old Valerie Parish from Iowa Park Texas and Chinese woman Mrs Parish aboard. The crew battled 10 foot swells as fighters strafed the downed airliner and a French Privateer circled nearby. A Canton warning had urged military aircraft to stay away.
