Japanese beetles swarm through Frederick city in the worst infestation yet, damaging orchards and corn while feeding on shade trees. Spraying with DDT, including airplane applications, appears to limit damage. Residents collect beetles in traps, shake trees onto sheets, and use coal oil to destroy them as beetles litter sidewalks at dawn.
Hundreds of continental visitors under the World Friendship Association found London hard to host as demand for English homes outpaced available hosts.
