The new price control act took effect at 4:05 p.m. today with President Truman signing the measure. All OPA ceilings active on June 30 are restored except meat poultry eggs dairy products grain and feed soybeans cottonseed petroleum and products and the cheap wear proportion rule. The agency must adjust ceilings within 60 days and revise practices accordingly.
President Truman endorsed the OPA revival bill. Rent Administrator Ivan D. Carson announced the act replaces all state and local rent controls since July 1 and reestablishes eviction controls. Eight areas will come under federal rent control August 1, with bans on incomplete eviction cases and limits on regain of possession for those evicted under local law. Grain markets showed firmness as bids turned higher today following yesterday’s gains.
Washington July 25 The House voted 229 to 61 to raise members pay to 15 000 with a 2500 tax free expense fund while trimming committees from 48 to 19 in the House and 33 to 15 in the Senate A conference will resolve differences The Senate had approved 15000 pay but the House kept 12500 with a 2500 expense fund The Senate proposed 8000 admin assistant per member which the House rejected
Annapolis authorized the education chief to join the national lunch program with a $570,000 annual Federal grant. Most local systems will participate and poor children will benefit through free meals funded by a ticketed, confidential distribution and menus emphasizing nutrition. About $2,000,000 will be spent in state cafeterias yearly by government and schools.
