Visit to imprisoned bishop opens trip to China
William C. Walsh left Baltimore with his wife to visit his brother Bishop James E. Walsh in Shanghai on a trip aimed at entering Communist China. Walsh refused to comment on charges of espionage and counterrevolutionary activities, saying he did not want to jeopardize the mission. He last saw his brother in 1938 and noted the bishop had been under house arrest in Shanghai for 27 months.
