State sues Tyson for $5.4 million over pollution claim
Maryland environmental officials filed a 5.4 million suit against Tyson Foods alleging disposal of at least 26,000 tons of poultry waste from a Berlin plant since 1997. Waste rich in phosphorus and nitrogen could reach tributaries of Kitts Branch and the Pocomoke River headwaters, linked to fish kills and illness concerns from Pfiesteria piscicida. Environment Secretary Jane Nishida vowed decisive action for willful violations affecting watersheds. Tyson said it would seek an out of court settlement.
