Politicians Argue On Prisons In Maryland Uprisings

In Maryland a six hour uprising at a Baltimore area prison spurred political clash as Rep. Parren J. Mitchell blasted corrections chief Robert J. Lally for a perceived cover up while Lally kept a ban on legislative visits. Warden Gerald McClellan said the shift would conclude today and inmates would be allowed showers Sunday as guards continued contraband searches. Governor Mandel blamed all parties for the disturbances, and about 75 inmates held four hostages during the penitentary uprising with earlier 200 inmates at the House of Corrections. Legal aid lawyer Mrs. Mardon W. Hoke visited isolated inmates describing anger toward Mandel. Hearings on the incident will be scheduled soon.
