Numairi's Return Spells Disaster For Arab Reds
BEIRUT Lebanon AP The return to power of Sudanese President Jaafer el Numairi is a disaster for Arab communism and a setback for the Soviet Union. Numairi cracks down on the 6000 member Sudanese Communist party, promoting nationalism and homegrown socialism while suppressing leftists. A pro Communist military junta toppled him, but Numairi ordered arrests and held summary trials with four coup leaders sentenced to death. The Kremlin’s displeasure grows though Sudan relies on Russian arms and aid.
