Frederick area soaked by 2.82 inches of rain after a Wednesday windstorm that felled trees and blocked roads. The generous rainfall aided crops and pastures, with stream levels rising and electrical outages noted while forecasts improved for pleasant weather ahead.
Heavy rains and winds up to 50 mph battered Maryland, flooding streets and causing power outages in cities like Chestertown and Hagerstown where crews battled downed buildings. In other areas, soaking rain saved crops with experts estimating Maryland corn value at up to 325 million dollars. Cumberland saw 1.08 inches of rain and several counties reported steady showers.
A strong storm struck Mountaindale Wednesday afternoon with lightning entering at least five properties. No major damage or injuries were reported though the Rice home suffered a burned fuse box and Mrs. Wiles saw a ball of fire around the television. Fuse boxes burned at Fultz Harrison and Bare properties, a motor burned at the Rice store meat box, and two trees were split at the Harrison property. Residents called it the worst storm they recall.
Richard Walters alias Frank Allen Lessie Archer and Gilbert Littles indicted for the Liberty Bank robbery face arraignment in Circuit Court before Judge Patrick Schnauffer. Walters pleads not guilty to assault with intent to murder and armed robbery. Archer, guilty to armed robbery but not guilty to assault charges. Littles held for observation under 24 hour guard. Trial dates not set.
A 30 year old furniture repairman died heroically saving his wife and two children during a severe Pittsburgh area storm. The family car was struck by a downed high tension line while they were in their Reserve Two home. The incident left the man dead on scene. his wife injured and children unharmed. The storm caused major property damage including a tent valued at 37000 for an evangelical group. Police logged 172 emergency calls within an hour. Also reported were non fatal traffic incidents, ambulance transports, and flight delays at Greater Pittsburgh Airport.
Nine men left by bus for induction into the Armed Services, the only July departure from the two local boards. Five volunteered: Jack Samuel Wagerman of Emmitsburg, Robert Anthony Brawner of Route 3 Emmitsburg, Darrell Williams Ford of Myersville, William Hoffman of 201 South Market Street, and Charles Edward Hahn of 110 East Fourth Street, Board No. 45. Inducted were Preston Junior Moore of Route 1 Burkittsville, Thomas Roger Taylor Jr of Route 5 Frederick, Oison Lee Anders of Burkittsville, Board No. 45, and Edward Roosevelt Weedon of Route 2 Frederick, Board No. 46.
South Korean troops and Allied observers clashed with Chinese forces on Sam Hyon Hill in central Korea. A skullless skeleton fragment found near a campsite is identified as Harold Lindsey age 45 of Hollidaysburg Pennsylvania. his son Richard 17 and Fred Claar 20 remain missing. Officials believe Eugene Lindsey was struck with the rifle found near the skeleton, with skin fragments on hair near the weapon. The men came to bear hunt and vanished after venturing along a logging road. their truck was found abandoned with no sign of the other two.
