Chicago today saw the steamer Eastland capsize while leaving the dock on a crowded Saturday excursion. Overcrowding was blamed as hundreds of women and children perished in the Chicago River, with many rescued by nearby boats as crews aided in the chaotic scene.
Rome reports Italy and Turkey near a diplomatic break after the Mondello incident. The foreign minister was given full cabinet powers to seek satisfaction from Turkey for the illicit use of the Italian flag. A disaster scene unfolded as Eastland capsized with about 500 people believed dead or missing.
Benin reports an official declaration warning that Germans working in neutral country factories including the United States, producing war supplies for the enemy, are subject to prosecution under treason laws. The notice cites penalties up to ten years and notes prosecutions for crimes even when committed aboard. It adds that German courts will pursue offenders.
