Scouts Bear Journey Ends With Philmont Trek
Scouts on a 2000 mile trek from Fred to Philmont Ranch faced a broken bus and a tornado damage site near Santa Fe. They traveled Route 30 through Pennsylvania and Texas, stayed at Tulsa University and Amarillo Air Force Base, then prepared at Philmont with groups led by Casper Betson Sr. Henry Wilson, Richard Asmus, Charlie Stup, and Charlie Nichols guiding 74 boys on southern and northern routes.

A black bear at Poni Base startled some scouts while others noted the trip’s whirlwind route from La Junta to Dodge City and Fort Riley before concluding with a homecoming in Frederick.

The State Roads Commission awarded a contract for the Cabin Jobo Bridge to carry the Capitol Beltway across the Potomac River. Two Indiana firms Buckman and Hansen Inc. of Fort Wayne and Roy Ryan Sons Co. Inc. of Evansville bid jointly $2 520 35 to build the Montgomery County bridge with work to start soon.
