Mexico Decides to Cheapen the Peso
Mexico City reports the peso will be devalued from its 1940 peg of 485 per dollar after IMF consultation. The Bank of Mexico halted currency dealings as Secretary Ramon Beteta called the step drastic amid global economic strain. The move aims to boost exports and tourism by lowering prices in world markets and attracting visitors, despite inflation concerns. Also noted, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad posted six months to July profits of about 9 million dollars with revenues around 153 million, up from the prior year, though taxes and expenses rose.
