Meat Tenderizer Containing Poison Sues Hygrade Unit
U S charges Hygrade Food Products Corp and its Mutual Spice Co subsidiary with marketing Spice of Life meat tenderizer that contained sodium nitrate. A Maryland man died after eating garlic toast sprinkled with the product. The product was recalled months earlier and mislabeled as papaya enzyme with salt. The FDA had warned households to discard any Spice of Life or Country Tavern labeled jars.
