Cannot Evict Tenants For Refusal To Deny Subversive Ties

Washington July 21 a high court ruled tenants may not be evicted from government housing for refusing to swear they are not members of a subversive organization. The U S Court of Appeals said the attorney general list was for screening employees not tenants. The Rudders of Lincolnton Heights Dwellings faced eviction in 1955 after refusing to sign a certificate denying affiliation with the list. The court avoided ruling on the Gwinn amendment while condemning the eviction as arbitrary even if members were proved.
