Middle West War-Conscious A Nation Divided Yet Resourceful
Dr Ignatius Bjorlee notes the Middle West shows war awareness yet faces fuel and rubber limits. Gasoline flows freely there, but residents anticipate rationing and fear invasion from the coast. Scrap rubber quotas have mostly been met, while defense factories raise regional alert. A reunion and local anecdotes follow, including Edwin Bennett in New York driving a 1912 Ford with 24 mpg.

Uncle Sam's Manpower Pool Wide World Features
United States manpower will be tapped under the selective service setup with five categories in black circles indicating call order from seven groups. The repeal policy favors calling married men only after single men are exhausted, but local circumstances may vary. Emphases: married men are not deferable if married after December 1941 and when induction was imminent. the directive does not mean an immediate cut-off for married men. local boards must assess genuine financial dependence of wife and children.
