Nation's only smallpox vaccine stockpile in Marietta
A Pennsylvania town near Doncaster County houses the nation s sole reserve of smallpox vaccine with about 15.4 million doses stored behind a chain link fence. Officials urge expanding the stockpile to protect millions, though even doubled supply would not cover all Americans. The vaccine, developed 30 years ago by Wyeth-Ayerst, is kept in Marietta under light security. CDC scientist Dr Jim LeDue notes dilution could extend protection to 150 million, but gaps remain in national coverage.
