Poolesville faces clash over Saudi academy annexation plan
Citizens rally against annexation of 525 acres for an Islamic Saudi academy amid plans for a $1.8 million wastewater plant and wells funded by the Saudi embassy. Critics warn of traffic, environmental risks, and town liability while officials schedule hearings and weigh protections and in lieu of tax payments. The proposal envisions staff housing, a mosque, a school for about 1,504 students, and rapid operation by September 1996 despite objections from FARM and wildlife groups.
