British Eighth Army closes in on Catania in Sicily

Twenty years ago the British Eighth Army pressed toward Catania as Axis forces in Sicily faced growing critical pressure. In the East the German high command sent two new divisions against the Russian spearhead near Orel, while the Red Army reportedly repulsed Nazi thrusts and advanced. A water spillway at Fishing Creek reservoir showed a bare trickle as officials warned the flow could cease without rain. Heat continued with days of 90 degree temperatures and dry weather stressing pastures and crops. Oil rationing coupons for the new heating year arrived at the county War Price and Rationing Board, to be mailed to eligible applicants next week. A broken rail caused a derailment of the Cleveland Night Express near Point of Rocks with no serious injuries. Maj. Gen. Leonard T. Gerow, new commander of U.S. Army field troops in Europe, and Maj. Gen. Russell P. Hartle, former field troops commander, were noted as well known in Maryland. Hartle is Chewsville native. Gerow earlier led Maryland's 2d division during its modernization.
