Jones to ask Congress on war food program
Washington July 184%-War Food Administrator Marvin Jones aims to win Congress support for a 1944 production plan to back the war food program. He recalls Secretary Wickard’s winter plan for incentive payments and the House Senate fight over subsidies and producer benefits. Jones seeks general congressional approval, drafting a detailed plan to present to the Agriculture Committees this fall. The policy would align with Roosevelt price guidelines and may offer higher returns for selected crops to secure needed acreage.

Less Gas and More Gasoline Move East
July 18 reports a plan to equalize gasoline rationing east of the Rockies within two months. Congress praise offsets east coast relief with Rep Hartley chairing a group urging fair treatment and noting the pipeline from Texas will enable diversion of Midwest supply. Ickes cautions initial eastern gains but expects a net shift toward more eastbound gasoline with potential reductions in the Midwest and Southwest. A steering committee pressed for inland routes, rationing changes, and higher fuel oil prices to boost production. Meanwhile an Eastern A book driver may gain from increased rations as equalization progresses. In the Northeast, current limits remain tight with less than 1.5 gallons weekly for pleasure driving.

OPA Meat Program Is Discussed By Tydings
Senator Millard E. Tydings charged in a radio address that packers cannot buy meat at growers prices yet meet retail ceiling prices. He urged fixing prices from grower to consumer to restore beef to fair retail quantities and curb the black market. He cited losses at a meat packing firm and argued uniform pricing would push meat to grocers and reduce shortages.
