The York Hussars tragedy and Phyllis Grove’s vow
In a fragmented narrative, Phyllis Grove, constrained by her father in a rural English setting near Weymouth, falls for Matthias Tina a Hanoverian hussar. Their romance sparks secret meetings until discovery, a bold escape plan, a public sorrowful reckoning, and two deserters buried with military honors and a memory preserved by village elders.
