Opening market activity showed a distinctly favorable movement with a rising tendency near noon. Tariff-disagreement rumors tempered gains later, as bids and asks fluctuated across commodities and livestock markets in New York Philadelphia and Frederick.
A blast at Stockton No. 5 mine near Stockton, Pennsylvania killed eight men and left many bodies unrecovered. Names identified include Charles O’Donnell and others. rescue efforts continued as families gathered above the shaft.
The House approved the Hailey voluntary bankruptcy bill by a wide vote and spent the day on judiciary business. Only two other measures were acted on, one to create an additional circuit judge for the eighth judicial circuit and another to subject railroad corporations to state juristic reach for citizen suits. In the Senate a late amendment proposing 2 053 600 for destroying the Russian cactus or thistle advanced, after a lengthy ruling on the point of order it was adopted by a vote of 6 to 22 in the Senate.
A line of forest fires swept toward Bridgeport after destroying Greenbush New Jersey village and nearby homes. Residents loaded household goods amid shifting winds, while livestock were moved to safety. Fire destroyed hay and dry wood, and villagers camped nearby as barns and residences burned.
Debs Eugene Vo Debs George W Howard L W Rogem and Sylvester Kebber officers of the AHU were committed to jail by Judge Seaman for alleged violation of the injunction issued by Judges Wood and Greascup. Bail fixed at 3000 each. hearing next Monday on contempt. Court ordered access to attorneys between now and then.
Reports from Birming ham Ala describe unrest after rioting and arrests. Militia presence calms streets as guards secure mines and rail yards, with numerous strik ers detained. Separate notices include assaults on railroad workers in Fort Wayne and a train wreck attempt near Hammond, Ind. Multiple international items note cholera outbreaks, political upheaval in Paris, and other regional incidents.
The first formulating conference on the tariff bill met in Washington with both parties present and adjourned after about an hour. Democratic leaders sought to enlighten Republican conferees on agreement elements while avoiding disclosure of private talks. Sugar, iron ore, coal, woolen and cotton schedules dominated dispute talks, with Democrats stepping up for their own bill in most items. The session closed with no plan for reporting back and expectations of a later general disagreement.
