Safeway fined for dumping milk into storm drains
DAN FRANCISCO AP Salt Lake has agreed to pay 200000 for dumping thousands of gallons of spoiled milk into Northern California storm drains in March 1996. The penalty settles a federal action accusing Safeway of Clean Water Act violations. More than 19,500 varieties of milk products were dumped by 24 Safeway and Pak n Save stores, with waterways including San Francisco Bay and the Petaluma River affected. Safeway says the milk was past its sale date but not a health hazard and that headquarters directed disposal without proper methods.
