Deke Slayton Freed From Grounding After Heart Issue
Donald K. Slayton, one of America’s original seven astronauts, was grounded from 1962 to 1972 due to idiopathic arterial fibrillation. A Mayo Clinic autopsy-like test and medication led to a normal heart and full clearance to fly. He later led the astronaut corps as its senior member.
