Maryland Governor Seeks Unity as Dukakis Delegation Gathers
Annapolis Gov. William Donald Schaefer led Maryland’s 77 member delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta signaling the state will back Dukakis on the second ballot despite 47 pledged to him and 20 to Jackson. He urged Jackson to accept defeat gracefully, hinted Dukakis may not be his first choice, and described Carter as a potential arbitrator to heal wounds while stressing the goal is a united Democratic ticket.
