Bowery faces rise of younger homeless amid violence
New York reports a Bowery transformation as younger, more mobile homeless seekers, many with mental illness and drug use histories, panhandle and prey on each other amid rising violence. One 51-year-old ex-patient was charged with murder attempts, while Pete, a 34-year-old shelter resident, describes daily hunger and withdrawal. The city spends about 11.3 million annually on shelters for roughly 26,000 homeless people, with Shelter Care Center for Meat receiving over half. Pete reflects on shakes, addiction, and looser morals, while shelters accommodate 1,600 men nightly across dorms and lodges, first come, first served. Sears, a former mental patient, lived at Delevan House before arrest.
