Canal Case heard on trustees fees in 1844 canal suits
Judge Alvey presided in Hagerstown yesterday over the petition of Lowndes and Sloan as trustees of the 1844 bondholders for fee allowances for themselves and counsel in recent canal cases. About $8,000 lies with the trustees, paid by the U S government for canal property in DC, to fund fees. The Attorney General argues the funds should repay 1878 bonds, and that under the 1834 act canal proceeds from sold property must go into a sinking fund to pay the canal debt to the state.
