GOP Aims To Make Advances In South
Republicans in the South push to expand offices this summer including governors in five states and Senate seats nationwide. Leaders tout a two party system while aiming to mobilize Negro voters and sidestep civil rights talk, focusing on Viet Nam, inflation, and reducing federal takeovers of state and local government. Saigon Night Life Involves Hostesses And Prostitution
In Saigon bars near midnight, American soldiers and local women mingle amid neon lights and late curfews. The wartime economy supports many women through hostess work or prostitution, with some earning far more than official salaries. Some hostesses are widows or spouses of officials, while others seek adventure, though many simply keep company with GIs and save Saigon tea tickets. The scene reflects broader social impacts of 271,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam and the moral debates surrounding the war.
